What is financial planning? This is something that I like to talk about with my clients to gauge their perspective and experiences. Some will think that it is super important at any age, whereas others will say it is more important at the time of retirement or when you start to have kids. Still others may confuse planning with budgeting. The truth is, of course, that budgeting is a tool used in financial planning, but the two are not mutually exclusive. What’s more, the big picture of what “financial planning” involves will vary a bit from person to person as each individual circumstance is different. My job is to help guide you along the way through the various phases of your life to ensure that your financial plan continues to grow and change as you do so that your dreams and objectives are always met. What do I do? I help people go to the dentist and walk their dog! I also help them spend time camping or playing dress up with their kids! I help you find the resources and time you need to do the things you love. Of course, I also work on helping everyone develop tax-efficient strategies. But, when it comes down to it, people care less about the numbers and more about living life! I help them find ways to do that. |
How do I do it?
Our relationship typically starts the same as any new relationship these days - a message via social media, a quick phone call after somebody you know "set us up," or a chance encounter at a store/park/networking event. From there, we will likely meet to chat over tea/coffee at a local coffee shop, my office, or another location convenient for you. In this initial stage, we will go over some introductory "getting to know you questions" to ensure we both feel comfortable working together going forward. Later, we will get into the nitty gritty of what your financial situation looks like, how you want it to be, and what we need to do to fill in those gaps. Sometimes, that involves me explaining finances over your 3 year old's stick people drawings or a game of My Little Pony. Sometimes it involves acting as wing-woman to help you explain your estate planning wishes to your family. All this to say, I'm a chameleon of sorts and the exact process adapts as required to make sure your individual needs are met.
Some of the services included in your financial plan development might be: paycheque protection, estate planning, tax strategies, retirement planning, planned giving and risk management using insurance.
